Aqui há uns tempos, quando ia para casa a horas já bastante impróprias vinda do laboratório, ouvi num daqueles programas de rádio que se estendem pela noite dentro, a autora deste blogue a falar do mesmo e desta paixão que tem pela culinária (e talento!) e pelos doces em particular. Façam uma visita que não só as receitas são de deixar água na boca (algumas complexas aqui para a leiga tentar reproduzir ;)), como as fotografias tiradas pela "outra metade" da autora são realmente bonitas.

A primeira coisa que posso dizer acerca de Paris, é que a ideia que tinha se manteve, ou seja, é uma cidade muito bonita, de preferência, sem franceses :D Desse ponto de vista, julgo que tive sorte, porque em pleno mês de Agosto, a cidade estava bastante "esvaziada" de parisienses. Poderão dizer que então não se tem contacto com a verdadeira Paris, mas não me importei nada :D Os franceses que conheci no laboratório só vieram confirmar esta impressão :D ;)
Que mais?... É cara, mas isso já nós sabemos.... Só conseguir beber um café a pagar mais de 2€, não é nada bonito (o McDonalds era onde era mais barato, com os seus 1.30). Talvez por estar em ressaca de café, me voltei para os eclairs de café, que são messssmooooo bons ;):D E acho que vão ficar no meu imaginário como um sinónimo de Paris, para além das baguetes (que sim, toda a gente compra e se vê debaixo do braço dos locais).
Com tantas horas de trabalho no lab, a verdade é que houve umas maratonas a andar em poucos bocados livres para conhecer o mais possível. No primeiro domingo do mês, em que os museus são grátis, fez-se o Louvre e o Museu D'Orsay e podem calcular que não foi pêra doce.... :D Então para tirar uma foto à Mona Lisa, é quase mesmo missão impossível.
A Torre Eiffel é muito bonita à noite e até se teve direito a ver a final do Tour de France (que foi mesmo no dia a seguir à chegada). Que mais?.... A queimar os últimos cartuchos visitou-se os jardins do palácio de Versalhes já nos arredores de Paris e que são muito bonitos; o Rei Sol não se tratava nada mal, não senhor ;)

Fui ver este fim-de-semana Herbie Hancock e os seus músicos convidados (e que músicos!...O solo do Dave Holland.....). O concerto foi muito bom, tendo apenas por único senão o frio e uma parte (bastante prolongada, diga-se de passagem!) de sintetizadores que era mesmo desnecessária....

Para os que já estão a torcer o nariz, aviso já que não quero saber :D Gosto sim senhor do "Sex and the City" (sou mesmo fã da série) e digo já que também gostei muito do filme. Podem dizer que é um episódio alargado (o filme tem umas 2h), mas a verdade é que já tinha saudades de ver estas personagens, o que é que querem que eu diga?... :D Por isso, para as minhas amigas que são fãs da série e que ainda não tiveram oportunidade de ver filme, vão ver que não ficam decepcionadas ;)

"Mooves"

Pois que estes foram os últimos "mooves" que eu fui ver à borla e tenho opiniões completamente distintas de cada um. Normalmente, quando vejo um filme de que não gosto nada, nem me dou ao trabalho de escrever sobre ele, mas quando vi as estrelas que os críticos do Expresso deram a este "Angel", não resisto! Já não tinha grandes esperanças, mas o filme é mesmo muito mau e não me venham com a forma especial com que o realizador (François Ozon) aborda os assuntos e bláblá... Acho que há muito tempo não me ria de incredulidade com a cena de alguém a morrer e o plano seguinte ser de um gatinho branco ao colo do mordomo da dita senhora morta.... Enfim, poupo-vos aos detalhes e não vão ver! ;)
Quanto ao "Run, Fatboy, Run" (tradução: "Maratona do Amor") vê-se muito bem, uma comédia britânica, um pouco ao estilo do "Love Actually" (mais fraquito e definitivamente com actores menos conhecidos), mas que permite boa diversão :) E pronto, fico-me pela crítica cinematográfica por hoje :D

ps- É verdade! Já alguém foi ver o novo Indiana Jones? Eu fui, e confesso que a mistura de Indiana com extraterrestres não me deixou lá muito convencida....

Se há coisa de que não me posso queixar de 2007, é dos concertos que pude ir assistir: Dave Mathews, Police, Massive Attack, .... Por isso acho que Portishead para "abrir" o ano de 2008, não foi mesmo nada mau ;):) É verdade que não gostei tanto da sonoridade deste novo álbum como dos anteriores, mas o concerto foi ainda assim muito, muito bom. A Senhora Beth tem uma voz espectacular....

"Lado Selvagem"/ "Into the Wild"

Tive o privilégio de ver este filme ontem; para além de ter gostado muito do filme (ah grande Sean Penn, acho que temos seguidor do Clint Eastwood ;)), que é baseado numa história verídica, adorei a banda sonora que é, tão somente, do Eddie Vedder :D As saudades que tinha de o ouvir :D Não vou desvendar a história, mas não se assustem com as mais de 2h horas do filme, e vão ver, porque vale mesmo a pena.

Esta foi a minha primeira (e até ver) última aquisição via e-Bay :D Tenho a dizer que não são uns sapatos quaisquer :), são uns Marc Jacobs que normalmente custam $350 (que obviamente obtive a um preço muito, mas mesmo muito mais reduzido:D) Tirando algumas amigas que compreenderam totalmente o meu devaneio, o resto do pessoal acho que pensa que foi desta que me passei de vez, principalmente quando digo que pretendo (algum dia :D) defender o meu doutoramento com estes ditos calçados... :D Convém acrescentar que o meu modelo de trabalho são ratinhos pretos e é de alguma forma, uma maneira de lhes prestar homenagem :D:D Ok, admito que quem me ouve deve achar que eu sou mesmo um bocado estranha, mas enfim... :D O que interessa é que me divirto à brava com os sapatos e mais nada :D

...que não tenho tido tempo nem paciência para blogar... Há alturas assim, em que apesar de achar que nunca tenho nada de particularmente interessante para partilhar com outros, nem sentido faz escrever qualquer coisa para mim própria... Estou a entrar naquela fase de arrumar ideias de trabalho e de vida talvez por se aproximar o ano novo (e a bem da verdade, já me está mesmo a apetecer despedir deste). Não é que tenha nenhuma queixa grave acerca de 2007, mas foi um ano, como direi...trabalhoso?... Já tiveram essa sensação? Em que esperam que estejam a "semear" para mais tarde colher "os frutos"? (Desculpem, agora foram as minhas reminiscências de agrónoma que não cheguei a ser ;):)) Mas sem certeza alguma? Em que cruzam os dedos e resta esperar pelo melhor? Ou que pelo menos tentam ser honestos convosco próprios (o que já é por vezes uma tarefa árdua...)?
A vida às vezes consegue ser tão chatinha com esta mania da imprevisibilidade... (Isto vindo de quem decidiu fazer vida da ciência também não deixa de ser cómico, mas enfim... :D) Mas também não tinha graça nenhuma se fossem só certezas, não é? Por isso venha o novo ano e todos os desafios: "quantos são?" :D ;)

Nos últimos dias acho que me tenho esquivado da tosse e nariz entupido que tem atacado quase todos os membros do laboratório, mas acho que não me escapei foi às alergias: têm andado mais arredadas graças ao bom tempo, mas hoje com o nariz entupido e olhos de quem parece que andou a snifar umas coisas (sim, podem começar as piadinhas :)), acho que elas chegaram de vez :( Aerius, é o que me vale....

Estocolmo

Fui passar uma semana à "terra dos Nobeis" para fazer um curso e apesar de não ter tido muito tempo para passear um bocadinho pela cidade, deu para ficar com a impressão que Estocolmo é uma cidade muito bonita, limpa e organizada (como uma cidade do norte da Europa se conta que seja). O frio já estava a começar a apertar, mas frio, frio tive na curta (acreditem em mim, não conseguem estar mesmo mais de 30-45 min lá dentro! :)) visita que fiz ao bar do gelo "Absolut Ice Stockholm". Podem ver pela fotografia anexa o quente que eu me estava a sentir... :D ;)

Sim, vou continuar a minha onda de fazer inveja... :D;) Ontem foi dia de concerto dos Police e escusado será dizer que gostei muito, muito e que ainda estou um bocadito rouca :D Os únicos aspectos menos positivos foram mesmo o frio, um bocado de falta de organização em termos de trânsito e estacionamento (também de alguma forma inevitáveis no Jamor) e o preço dos bilhetes (se fossem um pouco mais acessíveis teriam tido ainda mais gente; onde é q já se viu relvado e relvado VIP?).
Mas resumindo e concluindo: quem me dera chegar à idade daqueles senhores com metade da energia e talento que eles têm... ;)

Hoje comecei o dia da "melhor" maneira: uma ida ao dentista :S O resultado foi estar com metade da cara anestesiada até à hora de almoço e continuar agora cheia de dores... E o pior é que para a semana tenho nova consulta, para mais uma ronda de tratamento de cáries :( Maldita genética, que me faz ter quase um controlo obsessivo da saúde dos meus dentes, mas nem assim consigo sempre evitar estes tratamentos maravilha... :(

Uhmm… acho que com a gentileza, não sou muito sarcástica por natureza…

Não, porque não os tenho verdadeiramente. Tenho um conjunto de opiniões e convicções sobre vários assuntos, mas que não julgo que somem no final neste ou naquele “ideal politico”.

Pergunta difícil. O respeito. O amor. A amizade. O humor. E como somatório dos anteriores, a cumplicidade. Como perceberam pela minha resposta, não acho que haja só um elemento essencial.

4-É difícil levantares-te de manhã?
Assim-assim. Nunca fui de dormir até às 3 da tarde (que heresia que eu estou a dizer, estarão alguns a pensar ;):D), mas também gosto muito do sossego da madrugada.

6-Por que sou tão medricas quando vou ao médico? E tenho tanto medo do amanhã?
Não sou medricas de ir ao medico, até porque fui tantas vezes em criança; talvez por isso mesmo, não goste de ir ☺ E detesto que me tirem sangue. Quanto ao amanhã… acho que não tenho medo, acho que às vezes tenho é alguma angústia e apreensão, pelo desconhecido e pela incerteza, que hoje em dia, e muito na minha geração, vamos sentindo….

7- Se pudesses conhecer alguém que não conheces quem seria?
Não sei; eu gosto de conhecer pessoas que me ensinem qualquer coisa mais, seja ela qual for.

8- É fácil gostar-se de ti?
Espero que sim :D, mas sou um bocado tímida quando não conheço as pessoas e às vezes tenho a impressão que devo passar um bocadito por antipática ;) :S

O laboratório "engalanou-se" para o casamento do chefe e como se pode ver pela foto anexa, estávamos todos muito lindinhos :D
O único senão foi quando fui pôr a revelar à FNAC cerca de 70 fotografias a preto e branco que tinha tirado e fizeram-me o favor de as estragarem todas... :(( À laia de recomendação, não vão na cantiga que apenas têm direito a igual suporte virgem (neste caso, 2 rolos novos) porque não é verdade. Barafustem, para que eles proponham algo que tente compensar a perda; se vos convier, excelente. Se não, livro de reclamações, declaração a assumirem a responsabilidade do que aconteceu e ameaça de processo judicial (que pode ser conduzido num Juízo de Pequenas Causas Cíveis) ;)

Continuando a "desfiar" os registos acumulados da estadia em Boston, aqui vai 1 foto tirada no festival grego que tínhamos à porta de casa. A comida (pelo menos a que provei) não tinha assim nada digno de nota, se bem que me mantive nas carnes grelhadas com arrozinho ;):) Quanto aos doces... eram mesmo muito doces! Estes que têm na foto são uma espécie de filhós, com calda, bem bons ;):) O nome foi-nos elucidado por um grego e é o que está no guardanapo de papel.

"The Book Thief"

Acabei de ler este livro no fim-de-semana passado. Adorei e li-o de um trago (bem, alguns tragos correspondentes a uns 3 fim-de-semana, altura em que tenho mais tempo para leituras) como já há algum tempo não fazia com nenhum livro. Talvez como costumo fazer com os Harry Potters (não, não torçam o nariz, e sim, gosto muito dos Harry Potters! ;)) e com os quais se calhar tem algumas coisas em comum, a começar pela classificação para leitores mais jovens, mas que acabam por ser mais adultos que os lêem...:);) Aliás, acho essas classificações um bocado estranhas, mas enfim... O que me levou a pegar no livro e comprar, foi ler que o narrador era outro que não a Morte, o que achei no mínimo original e que leva a que o livro comece da seguinte forma: “Here is a small fact: You are going to die”.
A história passa-se na Alemanha nazi, sob a perspectiva de uma rapariga de 9 anos (que vai crescendo ao longo desses anos da II Grande Guerra) e ao que me constou basear-se-á na vida da avó do autor, o que a torna ainda mais interessante... Assim, não se assustem com o número de págs. (584), porque efectivamente se lê muito bem, e muito menos com o narrador, que às vezes põe mesmo as coisas na perspectiva certa... e mais não digo ;)☺

Car fixed and busy week

Last week was really busy; between getting the car fixed, and giving a seminar... Both things turned out fine, though I always get a bit nervous with these "public speeches", specially because I was the first one of the group to be giving this kind of seminars... Anyway, no hole in the car door and a nice new radio (it really makes a difference the "company" of the radio in the drives home) really cheered me up ;)
By the way, I went to the preview of "The Fountain" and personally I don't advise it... Too "zen" for me ;):)

Yeah, as you might have guessed by now, yesterday when I left the lab, I had that nice surprise expecting me... My car had a small hole on the right door and no radio... And this was in the Institutes's private parking... What a great way to end the day in a police station reporting the robbery... :(:(

I finally have my beautiful new black Macbook! Everything is great, except when I tried to configure my home Internet, not only it didn't work, but when I called my Adsl provider (Sapo, by the way), they informed me that this USB modem is incompatible with these new Intel Mac's.... And that I have to buy a new modem.... We'll see about that...

I've been having less and less time (and I assume, I've been more and more lazy :)) to post with some frequency in my blog, but between lots of work, courses, a bit of time with family and friends and simply rest (I've been falling asleep in the couch which is not a good sign, believe me...;)) there's not much left to "blog"... So, I'll just say that I'm waiting for my new computer to arrive (hurray, I'm going to own a black MacBook :)) and that I don't recommend any of my possible readers to go and watch Apocalypto... Let's just say that I think that Mel Gibson is drinking more that he should ;):)

Movies

Work hasn't been allowing me much time to dedicate to the blog or basically, to anything else :), but this weekend I managed to watch these 2 movies thanks to my friends, who don't give up in try to provide me some kind of social life :)))

So, "Manuale d'Amore" is a really sweat and funny movie good for these winter days/nights to cheer up; "Borat".... What to say about Borat? I really enjoyed it, although there are a couple of dispensable scenes (the nude wrestling is one of them, if you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about :);)); definitely it's the US that comes out with not a very positive image... The worse thing is that most of the things are really like that.... So, go and see for yourself ;):)

Yesterday, a bit unexpectedly, I went to this concert to fill in for a friend that couldn’t go. Bad luck for her, but a great concert for me! :)) Though I don't know that well Chico Buarque's music, the concert was really fantastic, and if you ever have the opportunity, don't miss it! There's an extra concert this Wednesday by the way! ;):)

Movie

I saw this movie yesterday, but to be completely honest, I still can't tell for sure if I like it. So, I'll tell you the basics: good performances by the actors, though the plot sometimes gets a little bit confusing. It's a dark, violent, kind of B series movie, but it's a Brian de Palma movie, right? So, bottom line, if you're somewhat a fan of this type of movies, I strongly recommend. And for the male audience, if you're a Scarlett Johansson fan, of course ;)

Edinburgh

Last week was basically spent in the International Dendritic Cell Conference in Edinburgh. It was quite intensive, but it was great to know "who's who in the field" and learn new things. We didn't have much time to explore the city (though Edinburgh is a small city), but of what I saw, I really like it and the Castle is beautiful.

I've returned a week ago, but I must say that I'm missing the holidays already ;):) The two weeks were great, lots of rest, swimming, eating nice things and spend time with friends that I didn't see for a while. The problem was in the return.... I had a broken fridge waiting for me and the smell and the bugs were quite beyond description... Anyway, apart from that, work is going well and I’m really looking forward to going to Edinburgh for a meeting in a couple of weeks.

In the last couple of weeks, I saw these two movies. The "Pirates" is really funny, and obviously Johnny Depp is at his best! The only thing is that basically we have to wait for the third movie to see how it ends... ;):))
For the more romantic ones, you have the "Lake House"; even if you're not that romantic, just for the house it's worth it! ;):)

Buzz

Last weekend my friends introduced me to Buzz, a playstation game which works like a Trivial Pursuit but specifically for music. We had a great time, specially making fun of the remarks of the Portuguese host of the "show" (for the ones that are Portuguese is Jorge Gabriel) every time you fail to answer the question. Our favorite is: "Querias batatinhas, nao?" :))))
But if you have the opportunity, try it, it's really fun and you'll spend a great time with your friends.

And the world championship ended with a victory by Italy. So, we had our little revenge from France and the only thing I regret is that this way I didn't win the bets here in the Institute. But I got really close... Second place... ;) Better luck for me and for Portugal next time :):))

Et voila!:) Again with a penalty converted by Zidane, Portugal is out of the final.... I must say it's getting to be a bit annoying, to say the least.... :(
The only good news is that I'm now in 1st place in the betting score! And the irony is that it seems that the only way for me to win, is for France to become the World Champion...

I'm 5th, after that "improprio para cardiacos" (sorry, another of those invaluable portuguese expressions which sound weird in english ;)) game by Portugal against England. Gooooo Portugal! :))))
Actually, it was funny, as the Damasio conference was during the game, so basically we were trying to hear something outside that would tell us if Portugal had won or not....And as the silence kept on going, it was obvious that either Portugal had lost or they went on penalties. But as the speaker ended the presentation, we could hear the screaming :)))) So, great timing! ;) Though Prof. Damasio didn't seem all that pleased with the noise that could be heard from the streets during the discussion period....Or with the cell phones ringing during that time as well... But what it matters is that it was a great conference and Portugal won in the end ;):)))

So, my current position in the betting rank: 9th. Still in the top 10, which is very good... ;) Besides that, let’s hope that Portugal wins the game tomorrow! :));)
For my posts not to be entirely dedicated to soccer in the last weeks, I have to refer that I've been attending a series of conferences since Monday, which will end tomorrow. These are called "International Summer Courses of Cascais" (of course it had to be in my beautiful home town :))))), and the first week is dedicated to the theme "From personal experience to scientific experience". It has been really interesting, and tomorrow is the most expected session (I think!;)) with António and Hanna Damásio, which I'm looking forward as I've never seen them "live" :))

As Portugal won yesterday to Mexico (I predicted the right score by the way, 5 points to me :)), we'll be meeting the Netherlands next Sunday...let's see what happens, but let it be Portugal to win ;):) Concerning the betting scores in the institute, I continue to manage to stay in the top 10 (today I'm 7th), but by the time the second stage starts, it's going to be hard to stay this way... :)

The craziness of the world championship

After 10 days, I had to go along with the rest of the crowd, and dedicate a post to the world soccer championship, that's happening in Germany.
First things first: Portugal is already in the second stage, hurray! :)) Though there are less flags than during the European Cup, people are quite crazy all the same :);) From all the pieces that I've seen so far on TV about Portuguese fans here, as well as in Germany (specially in Germany is quite insane, with the emigrants, as when the Portuguese team practices, there are more people watching than in the Portuguese league's games... which is not that surprising, but never mind ;)), my very favorite was with a small girl that had the chance to met Figo close to the hotel where they're staying, and questioned about her experience, she could only say: "he smells soooo good!" :)))))) She was really sweet :)
To go along with the spirit, a couple of people here in the Institute actually organized a kind of betting system for the cup. So far, I've managed to stay in the top 10 (eheheheh), but competition is really tough... :))

Back to Portugal

I’ve returned to Lisbon for 2 weeks now, which gives me no excuse for not posting something...:) My first week was basically to get over the jet leg and a quite tiring trip (yes, I had the honour to be entitled to not one, but two stops in the Azores!;)). This second week passed by already more to the Portuguese rhythm, working in the lab (I’ve ordered some really nice stuff :)) and (as we say in Portuguese) still “killing” saudades (sorry, no translation possible :);)) of family and friends, of the food and the ocean, and of the beautiful weather. Speaking of which, it’s getting really hot these days, I must say...

Maria Rita

One of the good things about Boston is definitely it's cultural opportunities; yesterday I took the opportunity and went to see Maria Rita at Berklee (it seems that her younger sister studies at Berklee), which was really nice as it was probably one of my last social/cultural events before I return to Portugal (good weather and food, here I come ;)).
And yes, that pink spot it's her.... :)))

Cape Cod

Yesterday I was part of a "tuga" (sorry I'll not try to translate this complex and exquisite Portuguese term) excursion to the Cape. We visited Sandwich, Provincetown (the highest point of interest of the trip, as it can be confirmed by the photos) and Wellfleet. Enjoy ;)

St. Patrick's Day Parade

Yesterday I experienced for the first time a somewhat typical event in the US: a parade. And not just any kind of parade, the St. Patrick ’s Day parade! :);) Apart of the freezing cold (when does it get warm in this place??!), it was fun to see all sorts of “interesting” people and characters. In Boston

As I'm now in Boston for more than a week, there's no excuse for not to post something... The jet leg is gone, so here goes ;) Basically these first days were to settle in and to get used to the US rhythm... Besides going to the "Casa do Benfica" here in Boston to watch the match against Porto (hehehhe, Benfica won!!! :))), it has been so cold, that it doesn't feel like doing anything besides staying home where's warm :) But as on Saturday we ventured going to Harvard, here goes what I looked like in that freezing day.... brrrrrrrrr

It’s now official: I’m arriving to Boston in a week and a half. So far, I’ve managed to rent a place (still have to request heating and electricity) and buy the plane tickets.
